When I was working at Newsweek, I often got out of work at two or three in the morning, and I would walk home up Madison Avenue often in stilettos from 49th to 74th and Lex. Wed spend hours getting our outfits together buying stuff at Canal Plastics Center, stapling photo booth pictures onto our jackets. At night, if you headed south through long dark blocks to the meatpacking district, there were clubs and leather bars. Then we had Woody Allen. Wed say, Theyre not up in the morning, so dont go to them or They have kids, so maybe theyre up because the kids wake up. Wed visit people in the morning, early. Everything had my initials on it, or the name of somebody else on it; it was really crazy. It was the three of us. I had glasses, so I put these flip-up sunglass visors on them. He would maybe drink half a glass of wine. It wasnt a rich peoples restaurant; it was a restaurant for people Elaine happened to like. Other times, it literally meant all-you-could-drink, whatever you wanted to drink, on every single night of the week. It was social, the Upper East Side ladies. Part of how they paid us was they had to strip some wood the house had five fireplaces, and the foyer was original, and all wood. When I really started hanging out in Manhattan, the primary place for my crew was Rock Steady Park [Happy Warrior Playground] on 98th and Amsterdam. It was hard. I had just moved the gallery to Franklin Street in TriBeCa from West 57th Street. This was a moment in Manhattan history that had never really been seen before and hasnt been seen since. Many of the bars of this era were, in fact, themed, and sometimes cheesily so. The apartment, at 1060 Fifth Avenue, at 87th Street, was like a fantasy apartment huge, with a view of the reservoir. Someone broke the front glass and stole the poster. An important place to have breakfast was Buffas, on the corner of Lafayette and Prince youd see Jim Jarmusch and Jonathan Demme in the booths there. It was all happening at the same time; there was a lot of yin and yang. And then eventually some surface decoration with tucks and treatment Id take the fabric and just sew in any direction. Ski Bar would issue custom-made lift tickets good for eight drinks apiece. The gallerys not open so youll have to come back. Sam [Samuel L. Jackson] and I bought a brownstone in Harlem around 1981. We liked to get there early, which the club promoters loved because wed get the party started. Pierre Francillon and Richard Alvarez, both artists and friends of fashion designer Andre Walker, in 1983 at the Middle Collegiate Church, where Walker held a fashion show. I would walk around the neighborhood, go down to 42nd Street and do a lot of movie cruising. There was an interest beyond becoming ladies who lunch. Everyone talks about the 1970s as being the birth of feminism, but for me, the 80s were really about feminism in practical use. Many of its bartenders have gone on to open their own places. PM: We refused to take a job. For a while I lived on the Upper West Side, on the parlor floor of a brownstone on 71st Street between Amsterdam and Columbus. Some of them were open 24 hours a day, or they were closed maybe four hours a day for cleaning. They were sort of an island unto themselves, and then you went across the park and you had the Pyramid Club and everything else was bars until you got to the Mudd Club way downtown. All the music [in the atelier on 125th Street] came from the VCR. A chance encounter with David Bowie at a downtown nightclub. Indeed, many of his customers would come from Normandie Court a block away. It was a restaurant a modest place, like an Italian restaurant but really it was an actors hangout.
